Mainstream Films With Real Sex

While many mainstream films deal regularly with sex and can feature in-depth sex scenes, very few Hollywood-style films have been made that feature real sex. There are only a handful of movies that feature unsimulated sex scenes, in which the actors have had sex on camera for the sake of the movie.

Interestingly, the number of films featuring real sex has increased in the last decade and almost all of these films have depicted the sex in a negative way.

The growth in unsimulated sex scenes has created problems for censors, used to banning a film if it showed real sex. The thorny concept of "artistic merit" has seen some movies receive an R rating while others have been banned. This also raises questions as to what qualifies as "porn" and why governments should care about whether people are having real sex on screen or not.

It is starting to come down to whether the on-screen sex is arousing to the viewer. "Artistic merit" is starting to mean "unsexy sex" - something that doesn't appeal to the "prurient interest". Of course, what's sexy is purely a matter of taste.

Are these films art or porn? And does it even matter? You decide.

Destricted (2006)

DestrictedThe Blurb: Destricted is the first short film collection of its kind, bringing together sex and art in a series of films created by some of the world's most visual and provocative artists and directors. They reveal the diverse attitudes by which we represent ourselves sexually. The idea was to "explore the fine line where art and pornography intersect". "Some of the sexiest moments in recent cinema" --Chrissie Iles, Whitney Museum of Art, NY

7 short films exploring porn and sexuality. Sex acts are extremely explicit and include cunnilingus, masturbation, ejaculation and fetishes.

Shortbus (2006)

ShortbusThe Blurb: From the director of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ comes SHORTBUS, an exploration into the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one another – and eventually find themselves – when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad world of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. One of the true sensations of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, presents sex and sexuality as never before seen in mainstream entertainment, and promises to be one of the most talked-about films for months – and years – to come.

Caligula (1980)

CaligulaThe Blurb: The most controversial film of all time as you've never experienced it before! Combining lavish spectacle and top award-winning stars (Helen Mirren, John Geilgud, Malcolm McDowell), this landmark production was shrouded in secrecy since its first day of filming. From the moment he ascends to the throne as Emperor, Caligula enforces a reign like no other as power and corruption transform him into a deranged beast whose deeds still live on as some of the most depraved in history.

Penthouse creator Bob Guccione notoriously spliced in hardcore scenes amid the simulated sex scenes.

Romance (1999)

RomanceThe Blurb: When Marie's boyfriend Paul will no longer maintain a physical relationship with her, she becomes obsessed with finding physical love elsewhere. She finds it in the arms of a middle-aged man who ties her up. "Why do men who disgust us appeal to us more than men who respect us?" asks Marie.

The film includes several hardcore scenes but the sex is passionless and sometimes hateful. There's also a rape, a degrading gyneocological exam and a birth.

Antichrist (2009)

antichristIn this graphic psychodrama, a grief-stricken man and woman—a searing Willem Dafoe and Cannes best actress Charlotte Gainsbourg —retreat to a cabin deep in the woods after the accidental death of their infant son, only to find terror and violence at the hands of nature and, ultimately, each other. It is a visually sublime, emotionally ravaging journey to the darkest corners of the possessed human mind; a disturbing battle of the sexes that pits rational psychology against age-old superstition; and a profoundly effective horror film.

The film deals with sex and has some hardcore scenes shot with different actors.

The Idiots (1998)

The IdiotsThe Blurb: A group of perfectly intelligent young people decide to react to society's cult of an aimless, non-creative and non-responsible form of intelligence by living together in a community of "idiots". Their main activity becomes going out into the world of "normal" people and pretending to be mentally retarded. They take advantage of this situation to create anarchy everywhere they go and try by every possible means to make people annoyed, disturbed, miserable, ridiculous, angered, and shocked. The films start as they recruit a new lost soul and introduced her to their megalomaniac leader. Contains scenes of real group sex.

All About Anna (2004)

All About AnnaThe Blurb: All About Anna is a slice-of-life romantic comedy with explicit erotic scenes made by women, for women. Finding herself alone, Anna resolves to enjoy herself without any emotional entanglements. But her ex-lover Johan keeps appearing on the scene. Eventually she must decide what is right for her.
This film is something of a crossover porn movie, with much of the plot revolving around the explicit sex scenes. Indeed, the movie wouldn't work without them. Yet it offers an engaging plot and strong characters and the acting is impressive.
